There are 2 main solutions to
solving
erosion problems on lakeshores. The first is rocking or Rip
Rapping the shoreline by hauling in numerous yards of boulders and
placing them at a 3:1 slope in the water. The Rip Rap
provides a solid surface for
the waves to pound against rather than eat away your valuable shoreline.
The second option is to
protect your shoreline while beautifying it at the same time by
planting a lakescape.
A lakescape is a mass plantin g of native vegetation along the
shoreline
to provide a buffer between manicured lawns and the lake. They
can be any
size or shape. Native vegetation protects your shoreline better
than lawn grass because native roots are very extensive and deep and
thus are able to hold on to your soil better. Lakescapes also
help protect the water
quality of the lakes
because the plants slow and filter surface runoff before it gets to the
lake. Further benefits
to lakescapes include less maintenance than lawns and a spring, summer,
and fall full of continuous color changes and blooms!
